Fenway Health is a large organization with many programs and services. Their Annual Report needs to clearly and effectively convey all of this information.
The Annual Report has been presented in a digital format for several years. For the 2020-2021 fiscal year, there were several new sections that needed to be included and this additional information led to a redesign. Firstly, this year was the 50th Anniversary of the organization and this report needed to include the programs and events related to this milestone. This year also marked the launch of the new Strategic Plan for the organization, as well as the Racial Equity Action Plan. These documents represent the guiding principles as the organization moves forward and therefore needed to be prominently featured. Finally, this fiscal year included the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Annual Report needed to include the vast amount of data related to the organization’s response to this health crisis.
The primary design challenge was to display an incredibly large amount of information in a way that avoided overwhelming the viewer. The report also serves many different users, and these different user groups have different needs in terms of which information they are interested in accessing. The report needed to be easy to navigate on both desktop and mobile and the navigation structure needed to allow users to quickly move between sections. The final design utilizes jump links, nested menus and clear typography to facilitate easy navigation, and there is a constant anchor link that allows the user to return to the top of page. This anchor link was crucial as the text and data heavy sections result in very long pages, especially on mobile.
Next Steps
There are several components that did not make it into the final design in time for launch. Most important of these, the navigation bar should be fixed in place at the top of the screen to facilitate easy switching between sections. In working on the site for the next fiscal year, there are a few other improvements to the mobile navigation that will be made. Firstly, the grid menu at the top will be adjusted to reduce the vertical scrolling required. Secondly, the primary navigation bar will be collapsed on mobile to only show the current tab until clicked. Once clicked, the full menu will slide onto the screen, allowing the user to navigate to other sections. Finally, a few of the sections will not be needed beyond this specific year which may allow for a condensed section list.
